HOMEWORKWeekly Calendar handouts, which include homework assignments, are posted on this website on the Forms and Documents page/tab by date. A blank Reading Log and Reading Summary form is also provided on that page.
Homework Policy and Due Dates What do I think about homework? Well, for most students, it provides necessary practice to reinforce skills learned in school. Per District policy, 5th graders are assigned 45-60 minutes of homework nightly. In our class, this means that students are required to read independently every day for a total of 120 minutes or 2 hours weekly, even when we have shortened school weeks with only 3 or 4 days. I have assigned reading for homework to achieve that goal, and to document four of their reading sessions per week. Students complete their reading log on any day, but the important thing is that they read! It is the number one skill they need for academic success. Students will complete one section on their Reading Log (4 points) every time they read. After Day Four, they consolidate their notes into a Reading Summary(6 points). The Reading Logs and Summaries are due every Friday. Over the course of the trimester, they should earn 120 points, which will be reflected as a percentage grade on their report cards. In addition, students will be expected to complete any classwork they have not finished during school. These completed jobs should be turned in the very next morning - not with the reading homework on Friday morning. Students may also need to study for upcoming tests. Occasionally, I will ask students to watch the videos found within the pages of this website. I have included the videos because they go along with what we are studying in class. The cool thing is, if they don't understand a concept, they can replay the video as often as necessary until they get it! Then, when they are in class, the skills they've learned watching the videos will help them do better on your assignments. Classwork assigned from Monday through Thursday must be turned in by Friday, or it will be not be accepted and will receive zero credit. Any work assigned on Fridays must be submitted by the following Monday, or it will be given zero credit. In this way, students that complete their classwork on time are rewarded with more free time after school, while those who need more time have the opportunity to finish their tasks. I am hoping this will make a big difference in the completion rate of assigned work this trimester, since many students had a lot of missing work which resulted in poor grades.
